Uptown Psychology
What are executive functioning skills?
It refers to a set of cognitive processes that enable you to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. These higher-order skills include time management, organization, problem-solving, and self-control, helping you manage your daily life, achieve your goals, and respond flexibly to new situations and challenges. When these skills are strong, you can navigate the complexities of life more effectively and efficiently.
Factors such as sleep quality, diet, physical activity, stress levels, and mental health all play crucial roles in determining how effectively these cognitive processes work.
Sleep Quality
Consistent, high-quality sleep is essential for maintaining focus, decision-making, and memory. Sleep deprivation can severely impair these functions, leading to decreased productivity and increased stress.
Diet
A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients supports brain health and cognitive performance. Poor nutrition can lead to cognitive deficits, making it harder to concentrate and manage tasks.
Physical Activity
Regular exercise enhances brain function, boosts memory, and improves overall executive functioning. A sedentary lifestyle can negatively impact these cognitive processes.
Stress Management
High stress levels can disrupt cognitive functions, making it challenging to focus, plan, and remember tasks. Effective stress management techniques are crucial for maintaining strong executive functioning skills.
Mental Health
Conditions like anxiety, depression, and ADHD can hinder executive functioning abilities. Addressing mental health issues is vital for improving these skills.
The 2-day Executive Functioning Intensive at Uptown Psychology is designed to address these challenges head-on.

Module Overview
Before we get started on fixing a problem, it’s important to understand exactly what these weaknesses are and how they are impacting us. We each struggle with different parts of executive functioning and this first module provides a framework for these higher level cognitive abilities.

Being successful in any new stage in life requires us to understand the types of tasks that may be asked of us. This may include identifying what email system to use, or where to find information about assignments, or how to set up a calendar.

• Learning and Memory
• Note-Taking
• Study Skills
• Reading
• Essay Writing
This module is designed for post-secondary students. College-level academic work is different from the work that we are used to. This module helps you better understand the type of expectations that will arise in college and how you can support yourself by improving your executive functions.

Many people struggle to complete their tasks in the allotted time provided to them. They put their work off day after day as it feels “too big” or “overwhelming” and they find themselves in a vicious cycle of procrastination. We work with you to reduce this procrastination and start to approach your work.

Having routines for different parts of your day makes them feel predictable and expected. Sometimes people struggle to develop routines, or they build routines that are so complicated it is hard to follow them day to day. By helping you set up manageable routines, you can do them every day and feel more organized and capable.

Having a restful night of sleep is crucial to your success during the day. We work with you to help you better understand and develop sleep hygiene so that you can start your day on the right foot both physically and cognitively.

Sometimes it can be hard to identify where we are with regards to our goals. By better understanding how to monitor your progress on long term tasks and assignments, we can decide how to use our resources more effectively.

It’s okay to ask for help and we want to help you better understand what tools are available for you to use.

Questions About The Executive Functioning Intensive
How will this intensive help me?
This program will help you better identify your executive function weaknesses and learn techniques to make life easier. You’ll learn how to better manage your time, build routines, tackle large projects, and say goodbye to procrastination, making your life smoother and more organized!
What if I struggle to remember these strategies when I get back to my job or to school?
No worries, we’ve got your back! After this intensive, we’ll have a follow-up session to help you generalize these skills in your daily life. Plus, we’re always here to continue working with you, providing ongoing support to ensure you keep practicing and perfecting these strategies.
Shouldn’t I have learned these things in high school?
Not exactly….many high schools don’t explicitly teach these skills unless they are specifically designed for neurodivergent learners. Even schools that do offer executive function support often don’t prepare students for the transition to college, which brings a whole new level of academic challenges. We’re here to bridge that gap and set you up for success.
Why is this so hard for me?
Executive function skills don’t come easy to everyone. Some people are born with them, while others have to work a bit harder to develop them. These higher-order cognitive abilities can be taught, and learning them can dramatically improve your life. It’s all about finding the right strategies that work for you!
Will I grow out of this or find a school or career where I don’t need EF skills?
Unfortunately, no. Executive function skills won’t just develop overnight without effort. All careers and schools have deadlines and expectations—that’s how the world works! We need EF skills to meet these demands and feel successful in any environment. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you build those skills and thrive!
What if I can’t commit to a two-day intensive but I still really need these skills?
That’s completely ok! While we do offer this two-day intensive, we also offer more individualized intensive-like executive function support. This can be through twice-a-week sessions or one longer day where we work through the skills together. We want to support you however we can, and adjust the program to work with your schedule.
