The Benefits

The Benefits of
Teen Therapy

Sad child looking through rainy window

A neutral
corner

Teens get a space that isn't school and isn't family — where they can be honest without managing anyone's reaction.

Teacher helping children with schoolwork

Skills for
right now

Anxiety spirals, academic pressure, friend drama, low motivation — teens learn concrete tools for the exact things they're facing this semester.

Assessment of kids mental development

Parents guided,
trust intact

We keep you appropriately informed and coached without breaking your teen's trust — a balance we take seriously.

The Stakes

When Your Teen Is Slipping Away

The door stays closed more. Grades dip, or perfectionism tightens its grip. The kid who told you everything now answers in monosyllables, and you’re left reading moods like weather. Adolescence is turbulent by design — but withdrawal, persistent anxiety, and sinking mood are signals worth acting on, not waiting out.

The Approach

What Does Teen Therapy Look Like?

Teen therapy at Uptown Psychology is active and collaborative. We use CBT and DBT-informed skills — evidence-based approaches for anxiety, low mood, and emotional regulation — delivered in a way that respects a teenager’s intelligence and autonomy. No lectures. No talking down. Real tools, explained honestly.
Depending on your teen’s needs, therapy may include:
Sessions are available in person at our Coral Gables office and virtually across Florida — many teens prefer virtual, and it works.

What Can Teen Therapy Help With?

We work with teens navigating:

Wondering if it’s more than typical teen stress? Our guide on teen anxiety and sleep problems covers the signals. And if attention or organization is the core battle, see ADHD testing & support.

What We Treat

What Brings Teens
to Therapy

Academic load, college anxiety, social evaluation — often all at once. CBT gives teens a way to catch the spiral early and act on evidence rather than dread.

When motivation disappears and nothing sounds fun, we work on re-engagement — behavioral activation, thought work, and rebuilding momentum — while monitoring carefully and involving parents as needed.

The straight-A student who’s quietly drowning is one of the most common teens we see. We help them keep the drive while dropping the self-punishment. More on our approach to therapy for perfectionism.

Missing work, late-night panic-cramming, a backpack that looks like a crime scene. We build planning and study systems teens actually keep using — a signature specialty of our practice.

Why Teens (and Parents) Choose Uptown Psychology

Working with adolescents is a specialty, not an afterthought, at our practice. Teens get a clinician who talks to them like the capable almost-adults they are; parents get honest guidance about how to help without hovering.

Families value that we:
Your teen doesn’t need to be ‘fixed.’ They need skills, a fair witness, and room to grow — that’s what we provide.

Our Approach

How Teen Therapy Starts

Free 15-Minute
Consultation

A parent call first: what you’re seeing, what worries you, what your teen thinks about therapy. We’ll suggest the right way in.

Intake &
Buy-In

We meet your teen where they are — earning buy-in matters — and build a plan with goals they helped choose.

Sessions &
Momentum

Weekly sessions build skills and traction, with parent check-ins at agreed intervals so home support and therapy pull in the same direction.
Don't wait for a crisis to act.
The door is easier to open now.

Questions About Teen Therapy

Extremely normal. We’re good at first sessions with skeptical teens — low pressure, genuinely useful, no psychoanalyzing. Many change their mind after meeting us. If they truly won’t engage, parent-based strategies can still move things forward.

We keep a careful balance: teens need confidentiality for therapy to work, and parents need to know about safety concerns and overall progress. We set these expectations clearly with both of you at the start.

Both work. Plenty of teens open up more readily from their own room; others do better in the office. We offer in-person sessions in Coral Gables and virtual sessions across Florida.

No, we do not accept insurance. You may contact your insurance provider regarding potential out-of-network reimbursement.

If we believe your teen needs a higher level of care, testing, or a medication consultation, we’ll say so directly and help coordinate the referral. You’ll never be left guessing.
