You love your kids more than anything…
so why does parenting them feel so hard?

Being a parent can bring so much joy, but let’s be honest, it can also feel completely overwhelming, and depleting. The daily stress, the emotional exhaustion, the guilt after yelling, with the added pressure that you’re somehow messing it all up. Whether you’re dealing with toddler meltdowns or teen eye-rolls, it can feel like you’re stuck in a cycle of frustration, stress, and self-doubt, with no handbook.

Parenting Therapy helps you stay grounded when parenting feels so disorienting.

What is Parenting Therapy?

None of us innately know what to do as parents. Raising kids is hard, and doing it without support can make it feel challenging. Reaching out for help isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a crucial step towards building your village.

Parenting therapy gives you a space to talk honestly about what it’s like to raise kids in today’s world. You’ll gain practical tools for managing stress, burnout, and the emotional ups and downs that come with parenthood. You’ll also learn evidence based techniques to help reduce problem behavior.

At Uptown Psychology, we help parents with kids of all ages feel more confident, calm, and connected. Whether you’re dealing with tantrums, teen pushback, or trying to keep your cool in tough moments, we offer tools and strategies that actually work. With options for one-on-one parenting sessions and small group therapy, you can get the support that fits your life.

We use proven approaches like PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) to strengthen connection and improve behavior, SPACE therapy to support children with anxiety and OCD, and The Incredible Years to build emotional regulation and social skills in young kids. We also help parents learn to stay calm and in control during tough moments. Together, we’ll teach you how to manage problem behavior more effectively, feel more regulated, and build trust and closeness with your child.

Approaches We Use To Support Parents

At Uptown Psychology, we use evidence-based approaches tailored to your family’s unique needs. Our goal is to help you feel more grounded, more confident, and more equipped to respond, not react, when parenting gets hard.

DBT/CBT
For Parent Emotion Dysregulation

If parenting leaves you feeling overwhelmed, reactive, or emotionally drained, we use techniques from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you manage your own stress, regulate your emotions, and parent more calmly, even in the hardest moments.

SPACE
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions

A parent-based treatment that teaches you how to reduce your child’s anxiety or OCD symptoms by changing how you respond, without needing your child to participate directly in therapy.

PCIT
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

An effective approach for young children with behavioral challenges. PCIT helps strengthen the bond between you and your child while teaching you how to set clear boundaries and encourage positive behavior.

PMT
Parent Management Training

Focused on helping you respond more effectively to challenging behavior, PMT gives you step-by-step strategies to reduce conflict, increase cooperation, and improve your child’s behavior over time.

We’re here to support you with proven strategies that make a real difference—for you and your child.

We make it simple for you to take the first step.

Our Approach

How Parenting Therapy Works

We’re here to help you feel calmer, more confident, and better supported in your role as a parent, whatever it brings your way.

We understand your story

In your first therapy session, we take time to learn what parenting looks like for you; what’s been overwhelming, where you're struggling, and what kind of support you're hoping for. This is a space to be honest, without judgment, as we begin to understand your challenges and goals.

We develop a plan

Depending on your needs, you can work with us one-on-one, join our 6-session parenting group (after a 1-hour intake), or access our on-demand parenting video series at your own pace. We’ll help you figure out what kind of support fits your life best.

We work with you

Each week, we’ll help you build tools that actually work for your family. From emotion regulation to behavior strategies, we give you what you need to feel more steady, more in control, and more connected with your kids.

Questions About Parenting Therapy

Yes and no! While we would be silly to say that parenting does not come with stress and high emotions, we can improve our ability to keep our calm while parenting so that we feel more effective and in control. In parenting therapy, we also teach you evidence-based parenting strategies to help you be more effective as a parent. We draw from our knowledge of Parent Management Training (PMT), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and Incredible Years. All three are evidence-based parenting programs aimed at helping you feel more capable as a parent.

Kids are like sponges. They absorb everything. When you’re able to stay calm, it not only helps you but also shows your kids how to handle big emotions. You’re not just parenting; you’re modeling emotional regulation in real time.

High levels of stress can lead to burnout at home, at work, and in your relationships. Learning how to manage that stress improves not only your parenting but also your physical health, your mood, and your ability to connect with the people around you.

Ehhhhh…not really. Sure, it happens, but that doesn’t mean it feels good. When yelling or losing control becomes your go-to response, it can affect how your kids experience you. Parenting therapy can help you find better ways to respond so that you feel more in control and your kids feel safer and more connected to you.

Not exactly. At Uptown Psychology, we’re trained in several evidence-based parenting programs like PMT, PCIT, and The Incredible Years. While modern “gentle parenting” focuses heavily on connection, these models also include strategies to help improve behavior and increase compliance, which are both important. Our work helps you stay calm and be effective, so you can parent with confidence and feel more in control.
