Uptown Psychology
What is anxiety?
Life is not always predictable. Anxiety is a natural stress response that manifests as feelings of worry, nervousness, or fear about upcoming events or uncertain outcomes. It’s a normal part of life to feel anxious before a job interview, a big life transition, or a significant life change. However, when anxiety becomes overwhelming and persistent, interfering with daily activities and quality of life, it might be indicative of an anxiety disorder.
At Uptown Psychology, we believe that everyone deserves to live a life free from the debilitating effects of anxiety, regardless of their age. Our tailored therapy programs are designed to support individuals at every stage of life, from children and teenagers to adults and seniors. Whether you’re a teenager struggling with social anxiety, an adult facing workplace difficulties, or a senior dealing with the uncertainties of aging, our experienced therapists are here to help.
Anxiety can leave you feeling:
- Overwhelmed by day-to-day tasks
- Unable to take risks in your work or personal life
- Afraid to try new things
- Constantly worried about the future
- Isolated from friends and family
- Physically uncomfortable
- Unable to focus on tasks
- Judgmental towards yourself & others
- Restless and unable to relax
- Struggling to trust your own choices
You can handle both hard and scary things.
Available in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, & Florida.
Therapy for anxiety can help you learn to:
Approach uncomfortable situations with confidence
Therapy for anxiety provides you with tools and strategies to face situations that frighten you. Through gradual exposure, cognitive restructuring, and a variety of other techniques, you can learn to reduce fear and build confidence.
Increase your flexibility
Therapy helps you develop a more flexible mindset, teaching you how to accept and let go of things beyond your control. This can reduce stress and improve your ability to adapt to new circumstances.
Become less critical of yourself
Through techniques embedded in evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), you can learn to recognize and challenge judgmental thoughts about yourself and adopt a more compassionate and accepting outlook.
Handle everyday stressors better
Therapy for anxiety equips you with coping mechanisms to manage daily stress effectively. This includes relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and problem-solving skills to handle life’s challenges with greater ease.
Overcome fears and take control of your life
Therapy empowers you to do things that scare you without letting anxiety control your life. We work to teach you how to better understand ways in which both you and your environment have been accommodating this fear and how you can handle it more effectively.
Connect more with the people you care about
Therapy for anxiety helps improve your social skills and reduce anxiety in social situations, allowing you to develop a deeper connection with others, build stronger relationships, and feel more supported in your social network.
Become less judgmental of yourself and others
By helping you learn to recognize and challenge negative, critical thoughts, therapy encourages acceptance and empathy, making you less likely to judge harshly. By being kinder and more forgiving, you can improve your relationships and overall well-being, creating a more positive environment for yourself and those around you.

Questions About Anxiety Therapy
Is anxiety treatable?
ABSOLUTELY! Years of scientific literature have shown the effectiveness of using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to treat anxiety. Though you may always worry more than the average person, evidence-based therapy has been shown to greatly reduce anxiety and increase an individual’s ability to face their fears. We are happy to work with you regardless of whether you decide to supplement therapy with medication.
Why should I expose myself to situations that make me uncomfortable?
Just because a situation makes you anxious or uncomfortable does not necessarily mean it is “bad” or something we should steer clear of. Many times people repeatedly avoid doing something or seeing someone that scares them. By avoiding something repeatedly, we create this story in our head that it is scary or bad. Life is full of uncomfortable and anxiety-provoking situations, and getting ourselves used to tolerating that anxiety helps us learn that we can handle it.
Isn’t it good to do things to make myself more comfortable?
It depends! Staying home on a Friday night because you are comfortable and cozy is one thing. When anxiety tells us that we can’t go out because the world is too big or too scary is another. We always have to be aware of who is calling the shots. Are we in control or is our anxiety in control of us? If it is the latter, then we need to take a moment to step back and reassess.
Is anxiety a bad thing?
Not necessarily! Anxiety is a normal part of life and can actually be helpful in small doses. It can keep you alert and ready to tackle challenges. But when anxiety gets out of control and starts affecting your daily life, it can become a problem. If you find that your anxiety is making it hard to function or enjoy things, it might be a good idea to talk to a professional to help you manage it better.
